New KCS F unit looking GREAT !!!! ATSF PA coming!!!
Author: chilli

While stopping by KC Union Station to see how the inventory of purchased items from the Milwaukee WI collection was going, noted that a splendid looking F unit was sitting on the "storage tracks" on the north end of the depot, below Science City's little observation window.

KCS number 34, lovingly restored to the original KCS covered wagon paint scheme, pre "sock for salt" white and red, and of course another generation removed from the current "Southern Belle" executive scheme.

It's an F9 from north of the border (CN 6504), part of the KCS executive fleet (number 2)that never was really restored and used on their business train in the past decade or so. Donated thru the graciousness of Mike Haverty.

Also, as you might have read elsewhere, appears that the same KC RR Museum Group has struck a deal with the Smithsonian Institution for obtaining the ATSF PA1 that Doyle McCormack is to restore comesticly and operationally.

Are there plans to restore what's left of ATSF 59L (DH-16) mechanically? I know McCormack had the bits to put DH-18 back together as an operational NKP 190, but the stories I had heard indicated that 59L was going to be cosmetic only.

Is the KCRR group obtaining the PA free and clear, or is it just "on loan?" Any word on the funding for the restoration?

I had attended the ATSF Historical and Modeling Society mini meet this past Saturday. I forgot the gentlemans name but he was with the board of directors with KC Union Station/Science City. He states that there is an agreement to bring the ATSF PA and restore to opperating condition but the price tag is around 1.7 million.

I believe that at this time an agreement by the Kanasa City museum Board for a study to determine the cost and feasability of restoration of the Smithsonian's Alco PA and then a loan to the Kansas City museum is all that has taken place.

No formal transfer of ownership is or has taken place, and I expect other Museum groups will approach the Smithsonian as well. As an example, why not see it restored into D&H blue running out of Scranton, where it also saw service?

Why am I not surprised about the PA?

Haverty's on the Smithsonian Board of Directors. Probably made the deal easy to strike...
