Chassis 1, Train 0
Author: topper

Tuesday afternoon, UP train IOASC 27 had intermodal chassis UPNZ100340 riding car HS89337, which was 22 cars from the head end.

At some point after leaving Oakland and operating eastward on the Martinez Sub #2 Track, the chassis shifted off the side of the car, and continued as such until it encountered the MRVSJ 27 at Davis, operating westward on the #1 Track.

The chassis made contact with all four units on the MRVSJ 27 (UP5011-UP9992-UP2528-UP9498), along with 11th, 12th, 13th, 17th, 59th, 60th and 61st cars in the train.

There was no derailment and, fortunately, no injuries.

However, this turn of events brought the Martinez Sub to a standstill, and several Amtrak trains took hits.

Air appliance damage to the 5011 required the unit be set out. The train was eventually able to continue on to Oakland with the remaining three units. They and the damaged cars were set out there for repairs.

I saw this train zoom by Richmond depot, soon after the head end was calling WS62 saying that they were stopped at MP 13. I would think that they went into emergency.

here's one of the victims parked on the west pass at Davis.
