Western Railroad Discussion > Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Schemes?Date: 12/01/05 10:43 Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Schemes? Author: espeeboy Just last night in a response to kwo's thread down below ( http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,1048539 ), I realized just how many "owned" paint schemes the BNSF has used on its locomotives over the last ten years of existence. So far I have come up with the following (sure to be updated later with your help!):
somewhat standard BNSF schemes (13): - BNSF with NEW italic black New "Swoosh/Wedgie/PowerBarF" Logo (H2 stripes, silver trucks) - BNSF H1 New "Swoosh/Wedgie/PowerBarF" Logo (H1 stripes) - BNSF H2 green/orange (thick cigar style yellow stripes, silver trucks w/ slightly different nose logos and nose paint variations) - BNSF H1 green/orange (thin yellow stripes) - BNSF Yellowbonnet patches - BNSF Warbonnet ATSF renumbers (various nose cigar band and hood lettering: "Santa Fe" or "BNSF" small and large) - BN Executive (cream and forest green w/ thin red stripes w/ BN logo) - BNSF Executive (cream and forest green w/ thin red stripes w/BN and BNSF logos) - BN Whiteface w/ Cascade Green (varies between dashed or solid white sill lines) - BN Whiteface w/ Cascade green and white pinstripes on hood (varies between dashed or solid white sill lines) - BN Cascade Green - ATSF Warbonnet - ATSF Yellowbonnet then there are those delightful bunch of BNSF oddballs (13+): - BNSF with NEW italic yellow New "Swoosh/Wedgie/PowerBarF" Logo (H2 stripes, silver trucks) - BNSF7695 only - BNSF "Kodachrome" patches - BNSF number over SPSF red/yellow/black paint (C30-7's BNSF 5176, 5182, 5184, 5189, 5193) - BNSF "pill" BN Whiteface w/ heritage white BNSF logo on green nose (BN 2911, 2931 http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,948358 ) - BNSF ex-BN/Metro North blue/red/silver B23-7's (patched as BNSF 4200, 4201, 4202) - ATSF Classic "Pinstripe" blue and yellow (on one survivor "Beep" SWBLW http://atsf.railfan.net/beep/sf1460ekimmel.jpg ) - BNSF 4800 9-44CW's delivered in "simplified" H2 minus yellow cigar bands, nose heritage logo or long hood "BNSF" lettering - BNSF all primer grey BNSF 700 series 9-44CW's (five delivered from GE this way: BNSF 776, 789-792) - BNSF "Vommitbonnet" BNSF 9647 - BNSF "Guinea pig" BNSF 9297 scheme (orange and forest green w/ blue/red stripes, two versions of paint on either side) - BNSF Yellowbonnet with BNSF nose herald and hood lettering (GP30U BNSF 2472) - BN diagonal whiteface GP38-2 BN 2100 http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/GP38-2/2100E.HTM - BN Whiteface w/ Cascade green and large "BN" nose logo ( http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/SD40-2/7812B.HTM ) - BN Whiteface w/ Cascade green and diagonal nose stripes (BN 6318) I know there are some more BNSF oddballs out there, just need some time to think about them. Think I am missing a special paint BNSF H1 GP38-2 with silver trucks right? Can ya all help with the list?!? -Ryan aka "espeeboy" (a closet oddball BNSF paint scheme fan) on the ex-WP Oakland Sub MP11.2 Date: 12/01/05 11:23 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: RedOverYellow2 In 2000, BNSF had 57 different variations of paint schemes.
Date: 12/01/05 11:31 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: PaulMerriman I have a slide of a C30-7 with the BN on the nose but not whiteface, no other alteration. I think there is a EMD SD40-2 with it too.
I didn't see it on this list, but maybe I missed it. Also, if you want to split hairs, BN 9400, the first 70MAC, had stainless steel rails. Date: 12/01/05 12:17 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: brettrw espeeboy Wrote:

Date: 12/01/05 12:58 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: kwo SD40-2 #8070 - standard BN green paint with round BNSF nose logo instead of stripes and smaller than normal "BNSF" patched on cab side.
SD40-2 #6364 and SD60M #9226- patched from BN whiteface scheme with no "BN" on nose. Date: 12/01/05 15:04 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: Nbetween There is a SD-40-2 in H1 with the circle herald on the nose. And the H1 with new bnsf logo.

Here's an excellent illustration: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,1048773,1048773#msg-1048773 Date: 12/01/05 17:45 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: csxt4617 since you're including oddballs, there was the 2 units rebuilt for LNG use
that had a lighter shade of green and white. At least one still exists this way, in the HLCX lease fleet (although it was converted back to diesel only). Also, the 4 SD60MAC's 9500-9503 had their own paint scheme. Date: 12/01/05 18:04 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: bnsfjth csxt4617 Wrote:

I know that the 60MAC's never made it to BNSF. -Justin Date: 12/01/05 18:57 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: SOB Ugly
Uglier Ugliest Butt Ugly Foogley And whatever comes of a BNSF/ NS Merger! SOB Date: 12/01/05 20:53 Re: Can You Name All of the Different BNSF Paint Scheme Author: Evan_Werkema > GoldenState Wrote:
> > BN w/Tigerstripe face, Cascade green cab and > > hoods. I'm pretty sure all the tigerstripes had been repainted whiteface by the time of the BNSF merger. There were a couple of oddballs within the Dash 9 "simplified H2" catagory. They had the cigar band on the front and the circular emblem on the rear, but that was it - no striping, and no big BNSF on the side. My recollection is that they were in the 4870's. There was a blue and yellow version of the "pill" relettering scheme too, GP35 2529. See: http://www.qstation.org/2529/2529.html. The GP38-2 with silver trucks, the first standard cab orange and green repaint, was BNSF 2099. http://www.qstation.org/2099/2099.html Do B-unit schemes get separate mention? Santa Fe's blue and yellow B-unit scheme was sort of the pinstripe scheme without the pinstripe; the SD45B's and SD45-2B's wore it. Then there's the GP60B red and silver un-warbonnet, and the H1 variation worn by the GP60B's and at least one GP9B. And then there's SD40-2B 7501, where the upper green band stops abruptly where the cab *should* be. And then there's the misfortune visited upon BNSF 8627... I"m not sure if the LNG units made it into BNSF either. |
