UP C40-8 With A/C
Author: stretch

I finally caught one this morning sitting at North Little Rock. Im sorry for the bad angle. The sun was in the wrong place and I couldnt shoot from the other side because more engines were in the way. But here is the 9201

Here is a close up. As I said it is terrible because the sun was in the wrong place and this was the only side I could shoot from.

In your first photo, in between the C40 and the 70M there is a weird scheme I see. Any idea what kind of loco that is?

Thanks for sharing,
Alex Ramos

That Scotchlite sill stripe being yellow instead of red is new, isn't it? (Or is it just the light?)

It is new...being recently rebuilt and repainted, naturally...it was painted in accordance with the new FRA regulations, which require the stripe to be yellow, or white (which does allow for some flexibility with various paint scheme variations). The best part of all is that cab-mounted AC!!!

Looks read good to me! I hope UP folks plan to rebuild ALL the SD-60s/60Ms and C40-8s! All they need is some TLC! I still can't believe UP got rid of the CNW SD-60s and some SD40-2s in the last few years! Not a smart move but I guess it involved a lease expiration. Still a dumb move for units built in 1986-87! You don't see any other Class 1's turning or back SD-60s on lease.
Red, any idea how many of the afformentioned locomotives will be rebuilt?

They are going thru the whole fleet of C40-8's and SD60's. Any un air conditioned unit will be air conditioned. Most all of the yard switchers have them. Im surprised that the CNW 8575 was able to escape NLR with its paint scheme. But it will soon succumb to Jenks im afraid to say.

Do they plan on rebuilding all of these units too, or at least as needed? I would ALL SD-60s and C40-8s need to be rebuilt at this point in their lifespan since they are approaching 20 years of service. No reason why they can't last another 20+!

I agree Rail1, give any machine good maintainance and it will last a long time and give you better service also. I believe all locos should have air conditioning. Maybe the exceptions could be the Alaska RR, the Cartier, and the QNS&L. These roads are in cold climates and are isolated and they don't connect with anyone else. Does anyone know if they have ordered any new locos? Thanks in advance for any info.
