Western Railroad Discussion > Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on theDate: 08/25/06 01:34 Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on the Author: texaswestern70mac after talking with a friend who went to the 1996 unveil in Roseville,Shane Palus; he said he did some exploring. he went over to the deadline and to his disdain he found the 8283 dead with many parts missing already. according to him it looked as if it had some sort of fire. he told me it was too saddening to take photos of it. for those of you who dont know the 8283 was the LAST gothic lettered SP sd40t-2 in existance. it was severly tagged earlier this year, cleaned in roseville, and sometime in june it seems, suffered a massive failure that nailed its coffin shut.
one can only hope an ex sp sd40t-2 is repatriated in a museum into original sp colors with gyralights......... Will Hemb Flower Mound, TX Date: 08/25/06 04:35 Re: Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on Author: KB5WK Here is my list of remainng unpatched SP/SSW units.

SP 8283 is on Author: SunsetRoute Thanks KB for posting that information. I am happy to hear that there are a few untouched SP units still roaming the rails. Too bad the AC44's don't lead consists that much. SP Forever!
Date: 08/25/06 06:10 Re: Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on Author: CNW6500 I've not seen where she has been officially retired by the UP. Where she is sitting is the inspection shed and is not a location where locos are kept when they are retired. It doesn't look good for the unit but with the UP power short she might be resurrected (doubtful but a possibility).

Steve Date: 08/25/06 11:52 Re: Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on Author: UPNW2-1083 The SP 3086 (GP40-2)was running around Kaiser (Ca.) yard last week but I went by yersterday and didn't see it. It must have been one of the last SP units painted (speed lettering) as the paint is in excellent condition. Too bad about the 8283, to me the speed lettering just isn't SP.
This shot was taken when the T-2's were new, in November '74, headed down Cajon Pass towards West Colton. Photo by Mike Johnson. Long live the T-2's!-BMT Date: 08/25/06 12:15 Re: Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on Author: mwbridgwater I was in negotiations with a contact at G E Capitol (GECX) a couple of years ago to have the ex-8306 donated for preservation (I've personally examined most of the remaining '74 built 8300's, and this one is in the best original condition.). Things looked promissing, but then they were all sold to Helm Leasing. Yet to make a new contact there.
I have red and twin/clear gyralites in my garage that are going back on the front of that unit! Mark Date: 08/25/06 13:54 Re: Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on Author: KB5WK Wait a minute. What a SP 8293 ?
SP 8293 Load No Arrived Nplaeast, NE 08/25/06 04:13 Date: 08/25/06 16:23 Re: Bad news for SP tunnel motor fans... SP 8283 is on Author: ProAmtrak I for one just can't stand the tag on that unit, other than that I really feel bad for 8283, one of my favorite model of locomotives, the SD45Ts were tied because of the distinct sound they had when they pulled a massive freight over Tehachapi! Sad to see it on the deadline, and also sad you only see solid SP Power on local jobs now:(

SP 8283 is on Author: El4Short Here's a grab shot of 8283 as UP 1996 was moving past on Saturday ... nothing fancy, but I wanted to get the newest heritage unit with the last 'heritage' tunnel motor. :-)
