UP 1996 Still in Eugene, OR: Next Assignment???
Author: espeeboy

The UP1996/8336/1983 linked power set has been up in Eugene, OR for almost two days after arriving off the MRVPW-30. Seems like a waste of a nice three day holiday weekend to just sit up there in Eugene (nothing against that town, I loved my time spent up there last summer). I am seriously hoping this lash-up goes south next back to RV so perhaps I can have a good holiday Monday shooting it SB somewhere north. Anyone "in the know" happen to know where this lash-up is going next? (hint-hint yardmaster and alligatorfan)

Well, its just another sign that railfans have no sense of history, nor does the PR department at Union Pacific. Said UP painted SP heritage unit should be plying the rails of the "Overland Route" San Francisco - Ogdan. Provided if there is any sort of historical content to this endeavor.

It's first run should have been over Donner...SP in the far west, UP in the middle west, meeting in Utah...

They are still attached to the P&W - maybe they are taking a whirlwind tour of the former SP branches in Oregon!

Cant wait to set up the camera and tripod on the Mollalla branch!!!!

Is it possible (gasp!) they have been to Corvallis for the hauler? (I've got pictures of CSX power out there. Could we get something better Scott?)

They didn't quite make it to Corvallis, John, but as far as Ashahr to pick up their train.

John

#1 1983 crossing over Water St. and the Oregon Electric line.

#2 1996

#3 Passing Granger Siding east of Ashahr. I like late afternoon light.

The Eugene Hauler (with the 1983 on the point) brought 10 cars out to Ashahr and shoved these cars onto the rear of the cars at the west end of the siding. The power (now with the 1996 on the point) ran around these cars on the main and backed into the east end and then cleared for a sunset meet with the Toledo Hauler.

Arrrrrrgh!!! I used to hear the dispatcher authorize a train to "cross over" in Albany and have an idea what power was on the hauler. I could drive 40 miles and then follow it back to Albany. Haven't hear that regularly for a while.

.........and I guess I shouldn't have said Corvallis. For over 50 years everything on the west side of the river has meant Corvallis to me.

The trestle on the other side of the river would be another one to sweat. Big power on a long pile trestle...........

Geez... the weight limit on that bridge had to be exceeded that day. The lumber cars alone look to heavy for it, let alone the running SD-70ACE'S over it !
