Utah Railway's New Geep Hits the Road
Author: GrandeGold

On Sunday afternoon, Utah Railway Company put their newly acquired KCS GP40 to work. For a couple of hours, the RUT611 crew switched out Provo yard's accumulated BNSF interchange traffic. After completion of that, the crew proceeded west from Provo toward Ogden, Utah with a train.

I caught a few images of the 2700 at the north end of Utah Railway's Provo yard. The unit sounds terrific and seems to perform about as well as the Utah Railway's 3000-3001 GP40's twins. The paint is in excellent condition.

The KCS 2700 was built new by EMD for the Western Pacific, and is scheduled to be renumbered to the UR 3002.

We get the 3000 nearly every morning by our office in Ogden. Cracks me up, on the
way between Ogden and SLC on Saturday there were three Utah Railway locals working,
all in the name of the BNSF. Sorta like the James Hardie plant at Patrick that the
UP is too busy to switch.

I sure hope that the KCS got the dynamic brakes working again. When I last operated this unit on the Gateway Western as GWWR 3008 the dynamic brakes were for "decorative purposes only".
