Possible Rebuild of Steam Engine AT&SF 5021
Author: bnsfengineer

The AT&SF 5021, 2-10-4 Steam Engine that is located at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento is possibly going to be rebuilt by a television production company and when work is started it will be filmed and made into a T.V. reality show.
This being reported by the BLE&T in a recent Capitol to Capitol Magazine article by Robert Frank who is a Officer for the Southern California BLE&T.
The article states that the TV production company would spend around two million dollars to rebuild the locomotive to working condition all the while filming all the work that goes into rebuilding a steam engine.
The TV company is in negotiations with BNSF to obtain their consent to do the work and filming. The article also says that CEO Matt Rose is looking at this in a positive light.
The BLE&T in Southern California is supporting the rebuild also.

My personal opinion is that this would be a great project to back as it would be interesting watching the process of rebuilding the engine and then seeing the locomotive come back to life after years of silence.
The public relations for the BNSF would be fantastic also as it would tour the country afterwards.

Hopefully this would also be the perfect opportunity for BNSF to steal the engine back and give it to a group who has the resources to take care of her.

Ooh, ooh, ooh. Oh, didn't someone say the thing was too heavy and would never run on mainline
rails again?

When they ran on 90 and 115 lb rail I don't know how anyone could say that with todays 133+ rail, plus it being welded.

And with rebuilt and functional 3751 just forlornly hanging around in Los Angeles with no real place (or permission) to run due to insurance cost, freight traffic, etc. just where would this go and where would it end up parked as another steam zombie: not dead but certainly not alive as far as any functionality or excursions go ?

Does this truly have official sanction from BNSF and not just a few nice words from Matt Rose? If not, forget it. But it sure would be nice to have an official BNSF steam program.

If this is true, why was the 5021 chosen over the 2925.

The ATSF 5021 (2-10-4) which is at the Sacramento state Railroad Museum will be filmed by a Co. from the Redding area but the BNSF will finance the work and the Museum will do the rebuilding....this engine will be upgraded...the work should take 18 months and Mr. franks is in Northern Calif. not Southern California....BNSF will have the operating rights to the engine and when not in use she will either be housed at Sacramento or maybe in Richmond...there will be a operating schedule coming up in the future.
The rebuilding will be run on the reality show...so keep an eye open for when this starts....

If BNSF becomes involved, will we see their new logo on the engine, like the Chessie Cat scheme

Sorry Dude but I think that was live from a bar stool!!! As to the rail question,
yah these things ran on relatively light jointed rail but the maintenance on said
rail was pretty intense. The dynamic forces generated by the rod weight on those
little dudes is pretty high and though you can static balance for such things the
dynamic balance is a lot more tricky and good for only a small speed range. But
all that being said they'd pull virtually anything put behind them at 50-55 mph.

IF this happenes, then UP will have to match it with UP #5511 [2-10-2]......maybe a restoration of the UP 9000 4-12-2 at Pomona.

UP 9000, the Ultimate Track Testing Tool, if it'll run on your track, anything will
run on your track!! Consider it barely made it DOWN Cajon Pass.
