Western Railroad Discussion > Looooooooong BoxcarsDate: 06/17/02 22:27 Looooooooong Boxcars Author: boomer I saw some very long boxcars on a passing train the other day; one was in the old ICG livery and the other was lettered for the Grand Trunk Railroad. The cars must have been 90 feet in length and were quite an impressive sight. What do they handle in cars that length? Is is something to do with auto parts or some other kind of commodity?
Date: 06/17/02 22:30 Re: Looooooooong Boxcars Author: soo6617 The long ones are 86-footers used to handle autoparts mainly body panels (fenders etc.) that take up alot of space but are light weight.

They're incredibly common around here (central Illinois). After covered hoppers and auto racks, hi-cube boxcars are probably the most common things to see on NS's old Wabash main, UP's old C&EI, and the CN-IC main near where I live.

Date: 06/18/02 09:06 Re: Looooooooong Boxcars Author: TopcoatSmith Also haul lightweight paper products, kleenex, bathroom tissue, etc...
TCSmith Date: 06/18/02 09:56 Re: Looooooooong Boxcars Author: hogger Here in Nevada, they load bailed alfalfa. Other wise we get several a day for the GM warehouse in Sparks.
hogger Date: 06/18/02 12:17 Re: Looooooooong Boxcars Author: Anonymous User We've seen them hauling woodchips to a woodchip user near Johnstown, CO on the Great Western Railway. Always been Grand Trunk cars to my knowledge.
