SP Question
Author: Jumbo

This is the lettering of a SP engine from a slide I took some 17(?) years ago at Bakersfield. What is the information behind TE, LAM4 and 1-85 and can it help to identify the date I took the picture (after January 1985 and before?)
Thank you in advance!

The LA designates the location that was responsible for the maintenance on this Locomotive; in this case Taylor Shops. M4 is type a maintenance code that in this case is defined as High Horsepower unit. Month and year is when the maintenance was last performed on the Locomotive. I don't believe it but I cannot remember what the "TE" represents. It's been a long time since I was working down by the L.A. River.

Not to disagree with you "old heads," but I thought M4 refered to a particular level of overhaul, there being M1 through M8. So LAM4 meant an M4 level overhaul was done, in LA, and 1-85 tells when it was done.
