BBC News container arriving in LA - photos wanted
Author: palizbay

The BBC News-branded container, The Box, is arriving in Los Angeles today from China ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/business/2008/the_box/default.stm ). The BBC is running a project tracking this container around the world - so far it has travelled from the United Kingdom to China, and is now headed for Los Angeles where it will be loaded onto a train for a final destination of the Home Depot distribution center in Allentown, PA.

I have a favour to ask...if anyone sees this container on its travels across the US, can they post a photo of it to this thread. It will be interesting to see where it goes - it can also be tracked on this website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/629/629/7600053.stm but photos from TrainOrders members would be great!

This will be an interesting load to spot...these are the photos so far taken by BBC News readers: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7620233.stm - not a hard container to miss!

I'm posting this message in both the Western and Eastern Railroads forums as it will be crossing the entire USA...

Looking forward to seeing the photos! The attached photo, taken by Joan McDonnell from Paisley, UK, shows what The Box looks like. Here are details from the BBC News website on how to submit your photos to them as well for inclusion on their website and on their Flickr photo pages: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7600625.stm - but it will be nice to see your photos here as well.

If it's loaded on a double stack lets hope it comes out on a daylight departure on the top level!

There is always hope :-) Just wish I was in the US at the moment to catch it...maybe it will still be hanging around there somewhere in March next year...

For further detail, the reporting marks indicate this is an NYK container, so keep an eye on NYK, OOCL or Hapag Lloyd ships and terminals as they all are part of the same alliance and often process each other's boxes.

I've been following this container since it started its journey in Southampton, England a couple of months ago. I hope it doesn't end up back on a ship headed for Asia.

Probably will do, considering where most of the US's produce comes from...but who knows, it might head east to Europe...

According to the GPS tracking, about 40 minutes ago it was nearing Santa Barbara, heading for Long Beach...not sure how long it takes to offload and transfer to train once the ship has docked?

Question...are there rail facilities at Long Beach, or are they trucked to the nearest intermodal yard?

If NYK then most likely will move via BNSF, maybe on an SLHTCHI.

The answer is "yes". There are rail facilities adjacent to the harbor and there are also intermodal yards perhaps 15 or 20 miles away. So Yes, one of the two will occur. I have no idea which it will be.

If its on an NYK vessel, then it will offload at the TICTF facility on Terminal Island and most likely go east on BNSF.

Could be the MOL Liberty, arriving from China into the Port of Los Angeles today...

It doesn't look like any container ships are arriving Long Beach today or tomorrow

Nothing at San Pedro

Hello

Here's hoping the container doesn't get tagged!.

Just the type of publicity we NO NOT need here in the U.S.

I could just hear the BBC news anchor saying the container was neat and clean until the bloody Yanks got hold of it!

If anyone's interested (Ted S-P), the container number is NYKU 8210506.

Wonder if it will begin its EB trip to Pennsylvania out of L.A. via the BNSF or UP? Reportedly it's carrying new measuring tapes and fashion supplies from China. ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7733747.stm )

This GPS tracking chart may be a few hours old (all times British GMT) but looks like it came in along the Coast past Oxnard early this morning.

We should all try to give this our best shot. The publicity for Trainorders and US railfans in general would be outstanding. Perhaps just as much fun as a photo contest.

Thanks guys! Especially from us UK-based rail fans who are not able to see this container on the rails. Don't forget to submit your photos to the BBC website as well or to their Flickr page...we're relying on you guys for photos :-)

For those modellers among you, go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/business/2008/the_box/default.stm and on the right hand side you will see a link to a PDF containing a template for this container (in the 'Project Update' section), which you can photocopy to whatever scale you model in, cut out, and fold up to create your very own model of this container. I have it in N scale - haven't popped it onto any of my trains yet, but might give it a go this weekend...just for the hell of it :-)

According to the BBC GPS tracker map, the destination is the Long Beach container port. Of course, due to congestion the ship might anchor off the coast for a few days before berthing...

Isn't the BBC container NYKU 6210506?

The box appears to be at the Port of Los Angeles as of 9.25pm Eastern US time. In the channel between Terminal Island and the mainland. MOL Liberty appears to be in port now, as well.
