I'll try and share with you some of the interesting views you can see on the grounds.
1) This is the view walking into the roundhouse. 2) UP Rotary 900082. Hard to explain how massive this unit is. 3) Another view of the Rotary. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/24/09 17:03 by MW3. 32) View of the Roundhouse 33) View of the Steam Shop That's all for now! I had a great time today viewing all the cool vintage equipment and appreciate UP opening up their shops to the public this weekend. Hope this wasn't too many pictures for you, just wanted to give you an idea of what a phenomenal collection of railroad history UP has at their facility here. Date: 05/24/09 17:15 Re: Cheyenne UP Steam Shops Tour 5-24-09 Author: reeb88 Sure is sad seeing C&NW 401 in its current state. The C&NW business train with F-units in charge was a thing beauty. At least it hasn't been scrapped, I guess.

These are great photos to see. Something I will never see in person. ChrisB Date: 05/24/09 18:57 Re: Cheyenne UP Steam Shops Tour 5-24-09 Author: PHall That's gotta be the only stainless steel sheathed rotary plow around.
And interesting to see that the E units are Auto Start equipped. Date: 05/24/09 20:24 Re: Cheyenne UP Steam Shops Tour 5-24-09 Author: Coach Is that a working, "on-call" snowplow?
And does the UP ever use those great E-units anymore??? Date: 05/24/09 22:20 Re: Cheyenne UP Steam Shops Tour 5-24-09 Author: Pinlifter Are the steam shops open tomorrow (Monday)?
Date: 05/24/09 22:26 Re: Cheyenne UP Steam Shops Tour 5-24-09 Author: MW3 I don't know for sure, but I would give them a call before you head up. Here is the website I found out about the Cheyenne Depot Days from, but it is not exactly up to date and lists last year's activities:

The reason I've heard is because they're underpowered compared to a modern six-axle freight unit. There may be other operational or reliability issues as well- I'd like to hear a definitive answer from a UP "insider." The "B" unit making up the trio, #963B, sees more frequent use lately as an HEP generator for Operation Lifesaver specials along with a freight unit for power. A second "B" unit was obtained some time ago and sits at Cheyenne waiting to be rebuilt for added power, but that day may never come. It can be seen coupled to C&NW #401 in the above photo.
