Then & Now - Joint Submission
Author: Maxwell

Joint submission on Millbrae, California with T.O. member "photobob".

Then - Robert's photo. Taken in 1976, his pic shows SP commute in action with a 76 paint scheme unit leading, great times! Back then rails were SP owned, Millbrae Ave. crossed tracks supplied by crossing signals and 2 gates, and its station had an SP depot.

Now - In November 2008, a bridge been built over rails for Millbrae Ave, Caltrain owns trackage from SF to SJ, and an ultra advanced shining lights Caltrain/BART station plus a parking lot is built on the other side of the street. The old depot however, still exists.

Wow! You can sense the speed in that first photo! Some of those commutes could really move! The Espee put on a good show. At the risk of offending some on this site, I'm not sure CalTrain is as impressive. I miss the peninsula freight action as well-check out the boxcar in the now long-gone team track.

That first shot was probably a special heading down to Stanford for the annual "big game" between Stanford and Cal.

That first shot shows the raised elevation of the curve nicely !
