My dad, brother and I went out for a drive today and found that the road under the Kate Shelley high bridge near Boone Iowa is now open. It's been a long time since we could take photos from here.

The UP obliged us by running an Eastbound while we were there.

For those that pay attention to these things it looks like the new bridge is not bothering the turkey population.
Also, those that have followed the building of the new Kate Shelley high bridge know that many of the steel girder spans came from the former Milwaukee Road bridge downstream near Madrid Iowa. They are now setting new spans on the piers of that bridge to make a bike/walking trail. It will be quite the bicycle bridge when completed.

Great photos, glad to see the side by side comparisons.

<<<<<the former Milwaukee Road bridge downstream near Madrid Iowa>>>>>

Is that the town that sits on a deep fault line that caused a serious earthquake in the 19th century?

No, you are thinking of New Madrid in southeastern MO.

Hello

Very nice set of photos.

I like the angle and the composition of your photo #1, very nice.

Interesting Note:
The grass has already overgrown the construction area where the new bridge was built. The new bridge already looks as though it has been there for several years. UP did a nice job in cleaning up the area after the construction was complete.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

I'm very glad that the milwaukee bridge is indeed going to survive, thanks for posting.

Good pics. In the first one, what is the big angled box like thing going to the left of the old bridge? upkpfan

Erosion control, you can see the teal green from the seeding. Plus we've had lots of rain for the past month.

The two bridges side-by-side are impressive, and I liked the wild turkeys! For a photo similar to your first (photographer on the south side) with a train going across the new span, look at the news section in the most recent (November 2009) issue of RAILROADS ILLUSTRATED.

Are you sure you're not looking at the shadow of the old bridge on the sloping hill?

I'm not sure, but I think you may be looking at some of the extra concrete on each side bridge abutment on the end of the bridge.

Are they keeping the old bridge in place as a backup or will it come down?

As I have read the old structure will remain
