Post your "railfan rides"
Author: Matt_Gidley

There was a thread in Model Railroading that sort of turned into a railfan rides thread, and I've seen a few rides here and there in other threads, but I don't think I've ever seen a thread JUST on your railfan vehicle of choice. So, post 'em if you got 'em!

---------------

I've had my 05 GMC since late 08 and it's been on many fanning adventures. I love it as a daily driver and a road trip vehicle, but I won't be buying another GM vehicle again.

1) Winter time camo on the frozen Mississippi.
2) Watching warbonnets at Laclede's Landing in Saint Louis.
3) Checking out St. Louis Union Station.

2003 Ford F150. She's been great so far. However, the next one will be a 4X4.

1) My truck at Navajo Tank about 30 miles west of Chama, NM (Oct 2009)

2) My truck at Arboles Tank, roughly halfway between Durango, CO and Chama, NM (July 2008)

3) My truck on Enyart Road on the East Broad Top (Sep 2009)

Well, that explains a lot. Couldn't have
picked a better spot to give up though :)

Here is my current ride-a 1999 Tahoe with 190k on her, posing in front of some boring everyday Union Pacific power in Dolton, Illinois a couple of winters ago.

Don't laugh, it's paid for :-)

I drive a Techno Blue 2001 VW Beetle GLX that I named 'Skylar". I purchased it new and it currently has 140,000 miles on the odometer. It came factory equipped with a turbocharged, 160 hp, five valve per cylinder 1.8 liter four banger. Get's about 35 mpg or so on my numerous trips to Helper (with the power of a medium size V-6). A very reliable car with a roomy and comfortable cabin. The best part of all...(once again) it's paid for...the ultimate luxury in my opinion.

Of course I'd happily trade Skylar in on a shiny new warbonnet.

While not track-side (just in my carport), here are my two rail rides: The 1999 Durango 4x4 (with 3-1/2" lift and 33" mud-radials) is used for most of my trips. It's been on the entire Bodie and Benson right of way around Mono Lake. The 2008 smart is for around town. Being a convertible, I just lower the top, stand and take photographs. Kind of shoot and run.... (the third vehicle is the wife's).

I currently drive a 2002 Toyota Highlander. It has 197,500 miles on it and still drives like it did when it was new. Took it to Oregon and back on a 7,000 mile trip this last summer.

1. Here's a shot of it just north of Salem, OR on July 27, 2009 taken while chasing the southbound Portland & Western train 663 (that was the old number when BNSF ran it, Vancouver, WA - Albany, OR) running on the UP.

Here's two that I have posted before of my 1948 Chevrolet Coupe. I've owned it since 1971. For the car guys, it has a 72 Nova subframe, 350 V-8, Turbo 350 AT, tilt wheel, power steering and power disc brakes. It's going to the paint shop this year.

2. This photo was taken in Fort Worth on October 2,2008.

3. One more of my 48 taken when I lived in Ohio. I drove them both that day in July 1998.

OK - now for the European angle (hopefully allowed in the circs).

This is my Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi 4x4 - it's amazingly sure-footed, especially in deep snow, and is satisfactorily quick off the mark too.

Doesn't Skoda build streetcars?

Check this link regarding United Streetcar, an Oregon company that builds streetcars.

In Europe, Skoda is mostly known as a very old and respected car manufacturer. They also made what became known as the Panzer 38(t) tank, much used and very respected by the Germans in all the early blitzkriegs, plus the very successful Hetzer tank destroyer, which they were still selling to the Swiss post-war. Skoda lost its huge reputation following decades of manufacturing duff cars by the million on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain, but it's now at the leading edge of European car manufacturing, and owned by VW.
