Santa Fe GP40X ... 1994-2011
Author: burlingtonjohn

I've always had an eye for the rare/unusual/one of, etc type of locomotives. Back in the day when I was shooting with Kodachrome, I tended to ration my shots for obvious reasons. But one class of locomotive was always guaranteed a shot was the EMD GP40X. Didn't matter if it was SP, Santa Fe or UP. If I would see one, I'd fire away. In today's digital era, I am free to fire away without worrying about film or processing costs.

For your consideration are two shots of the same locomotive ... AT&SF 3806 at San Berdoo sometime in 1994 (yup, I know, I should have been better about marking my slides) and BNSF 3036 at West Quincy Missouri on 8 Feb 2011 ...

I am of the opinion that the 3036 in 2011 looks darned near as good as it did in 1994 as Santa Fe 3806.

Burlington John

Thanks Mike, great stuff. Have pix of the UP, AT&SF & SP GP40X units in service, never did catch a Southern one, though. Remember photographing the SP units (think it was the 7200/7231) when they worked for the BN in 1979 or so through my hometown of Palmyra Missouri. I was armed with my trusty Kodak 110 instamatic ... life was good!

For the fans of GP40X: (Thanks WAF for the info) SP 7201, a GP40X, leads the OARVV at Martinez, CA on August 16, 1980. The power returned the next evening on the RVWJR to Watsonville Jct. On the 18th, that set left WJ on the WJLAY for LA town. By the 19th, the GP40Xs were back on the LAOAC out of LA.

Just about every one I ever caught had a "Super Series failure" and ran sand most of the time for no reason. If they were rarely working right, they had a high pitched screeching sound from the wheels trying to turn about 5% faster than than normal.
