Western Railroad Discussion > Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the moveDate: 08/15/11 19:15 Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the move Author: Betsy M&ET 607, 608, and 609 were spotted on Highway 88 at the California-Nevada border the evening of Aug 14. Anyone know where they are headed? A search of the archives here and other places came up no joy.
Thanks for any info. Hate to see them go... David Allen photo. Elizabeth Allen Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/15/11 19:44 by Betsy. Date: 08/15/11 19:29 Re: Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the move Author: coach Highway 88? Were they are big rig lowbed trailers??

Date: 08/15/11 21:22 Re: Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the move Author: lynnpowell #609 was scrapped a while back......the other unit is #604, leaving only 600, 601, 602, 603, and 605 in Modesto.
Date: 08/15/11 23:35 Re: Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the move Author: BrooklynHauler Taking HWY 88 probably cause they couldn't get a permit for I-80 for one reason or the other, I know I80 over Donner is under major reconstruction at the moment (finally..)
But, California loves to send oversize-loads up its secondary highways, instead of the interstate, and never for the same reason. Date: 08/16/11 03:58 Re: Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the move Author: PERichardson Sterling Rail owns them so I´d guess they stay in Modesto until re-sold.
Date: 08/16/11 09:52 Re: Modesto & Empire Traction 70 tonners on the move Author: wlankenau They've been sold to Mobil Grain, Ltd. of Saskatchewan. IIRC, 600 will be kept by M&ET, and of course No. 613 went to PSRM recently.

Not all of 609 ended up in the scrap bin. The nose, bell and horn are still around. This one had the trucks removed. Seems it could be transported easier by rail.
