Western Railroad Discussion > First EMD Tier 4 locomotiveDate: 08/27/11 22:52 First EMD Tier 4 locomotive Author: SOO6617 It has been reported that EMD's first Tier 4 locomotive is heading to Minneapolis for RSI Show. The locomotive is currently tarped but should be visible once it reaches Minneapolis and the show starts.

True enough! I think back to the 70's when things were popping like crazy from EMD and GE. White (maybe silver) end handrails also. Photo of it on RRPictureArchives.Net

I would expect it to be based on the SD70ACe, although EMD might change the model designation with the debut of Tier 4. It will bring more changes than Tier 3. Date: 08/28/11 09:14 Re: First EMD Tier 4 locomotive Author: peoriarr1 Its an aceish with new motor. Will prob sound like the ns motors with cat power a little quiet and more like a loud construction tractor at speed.

Date: 08/28/11 10:00 Re: First EMD Tier 4 locomotive Author: SCL1517 I'll be extremely surprised if it is in any way more esthetically pleasing. If there is a diesel particulate filter, that's probably yet another "box" somewhere on the carbody. On the other hand, NS's latest PR43C showed up with a very nice looking cab design, and I'd assume that would have to be in the same Progress/Cat/EMD toolbox.

Why would it have to be a 710? Date: 08/28/11 13:51 Re: First EMD Tier 4 locomotive Author: nwkrailfan The 710 is basically Tier 4 compliant I believe, somebody feel free to correct me, but I remember reading little if any modifications need to be made to get it Tier 4 compliant.

------------------------------------------------------- > EGR like in an automobile EGR valve? Kinda, diesels require a EGR cooler to cool the exhaust gasses before being fed back in the intake. This is a common and expensive source of failure on many of today's road going diesel engines. It's expected that variable valve timing being tested by Cummins, Daimler and GM (not jointly, all on there own) will make EGR a thing of the past on road going diesel engines. There are a lot of rumors floating around on just how EMD plans on meeting Tier 4, I've never seen or heard of a EGR system being used on something this big, but I guess there is a first for everything. I'll do my best to post some photos.
