McCloud Railway Has Been SOLD! It is Finally Official
Author: LoggerHogger

After 2 years of negotiations, we have completed the sale of the McCloud Railway from Jeff Forbis to the owner of Railroad Materials Salvage Inc.

Don't let the name scare you, there are plans to save the existing McCloud Ry trackage.

That being said however, we do have all the passenger cars up for sale at the present time.

The new owner has shipped in some gondola cars to start scrapping all surplus equipment.

Time will tell how this will unfold. For now the McCloud Ry has a new owner/operator.

Sorry, this doesn't sound good so far.

Any post that includes the words "Salvage, scrap, surplus, and for sale" is not encouraging.

in the fall colors on the Black Butte subdivision thread

Was this tidbit 3rd or 4th post down.

>>> 8) Talked with the Conductor and he said the McCloud owner ordered 100 of these cars to clear away debries and scrap metal on the line.

the poster was talking about a photo of a gondola car.

The car in the photo, CTRN 501267, has a load limit of 219,000 pounds or about 110 tons. If they ordered one hundred of these cars thats around 11,000 tons of scrap. At that rate, there won't be much of the McCloud left!

I'm sure that the current overly hot scrap market has something to do with the "liquidation" in progress on the McCloud and many other shortlines.

Does this sale include the SD38s? If not, what are the disposal plans for these units?

How many freight cars are left in the McCloud yard? I've not been to town in a while, but if there are any of the McCloud's fleet of Plate B double-door cars still kicking around, it sounds like they are not long for the world.

Any other interesting pieces of rolling stock left down there that are at risk of meeting the scrapper's torch?

So what are the remaaining/potential customers on the line?

Any justification to keep this line active or quit and take it up? (hope not)!

Does the new owner want to resume the Dinner Trains?

I have to completely agree with you there. Doesn't sound all that good to me either. I would be curious as to what plans this new owner has for the McCloud.

100 gondolas sounds rather arbitrary, curious if that was just an expression for a whole bunch of cars or a real number of cars ordered. Or maybe 5 cars a week for...a while.

To clarify on the sale, yes, all the rolling stock and locomotives are included. There are a couple of historic pieces that are privately owned that will to to their private owners, but all the diesels and passenger equipment has been sold to the new owner.

We are looking for buyers on behalf of the new owner to sell the passenger equipment to, including the dinner train.

Take the S off of SCRAP and you have CRAP so I guess you could say the old McCloud RR is all CRAP now.

Thanks for the clarification. If the 'Dinner Train' is moving off the property and there's nothing announced to replace it then this does describe a recycle project. Private equipment off the property, pretty much puts a lid on it.
