AZER & SLRG power coming west on Golden State
Author: dcfbalcoS1

The UP 8628 West has two SLRG B40-8 units and three AZER GP-35 units ( all dead ) moving west from Tyrone, Okla at 2 pm today if you want to catch them. Here is what we got and I am thinking the GP-35s were originally WP units.

Nose shots of the AZER 2502 and 2503. Train is a manifest with 120 cars if I counted correctly. Probably not going to be moving very fast and these units are going to Lubbock, Texas. Not sure of their routing and if it will change at Dalhart, Texas.

They are ex-WP units. The converted headlights are a dead giveaway.

2501 is ex-WP 3006, built November 1963 as part of WP's first order of the model
2502 is ex-WP 3015, built March 1965 as part of WP's third order of the model
2503 is ex-WP 3017, also part of the third order

Anyone know where they are going? Would love to eventually have 1 or 2 WP GP35s in Portola.

Lubbock, Texas and probably south from Dalhart, Texas. No idea what their plans are for them but anything can be rebuilt.

We are shifting power from the TNMR to the West Texas and Lubbock. Now that we have SD90MAC43's to handle the heavy frac sand tonnage on the TNMR, we are bringing more four axle units for expanding sand traffic on WTL.

Would be happy to paint one in a WP heritage scheme at our new Wolfforth shop if one of you guys will send drawings and paint numbers.

The unique headlight and rear light housings are a WP-only spotting feature of all WP GP35's and the first two orders of GP40's, all of which were delivered in orange and silver Zephyr colors. The round plates cover the openings where the barrel headlights were mounted. Those were converted to sealed beam headlights in the early 1970's. The nose lights were added when the units were rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen in 1980, then plated over by UP.
