a Texan visits the Flint Hills
Author: santafe199

I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow TO member from down Texas way. Mr. Jim Spears aka "Dublin District" & I had traded a few PMs about setting up his trek into
the Kansas Flint Hills and the much anticipated meeting occurred this past week. He arrived in Manhattan Wednesday night, the 2nd and we had a late dinner at IHOP.
Then it was up at 'atem' by 7 AM in search of depots and trains. The weather was not all that good in the morning, but was fairly nice most of the afternoon. We
crammed as much of the Flint Hills as we could into one day. In the morning we ran down 3 old depots (St. George on the KP and Paxico & McFarland on the UP-GSR).
We also got a couple of UP trains in the Alta Vista/Dwight area. Moving south we took a look at the 3 depots in Council Grove. We shot the Mop depot as well as the
quaint little (private) MK&T Sylvan Park depot that is currently on loan to Council Grove for display adjacent to the original MK&T depot on US hwy 56 in town.

We met up with local TO member and Flint Hills regular "Milw E-70" at Strong City. The BNSF was pretty quiet so we buzzed over to Florence to see what was left
of the original AT&SF depot. It was blocked by a misc construction trailer, but we found & shot the original Harvey House which was moved away from the mainline
years ago. The building was being worked on but we shot it & an old AT&SF caboose sitting nearby as well. We also took a quick look at the Cedar Point depot on
the way back to the transcon. Track maintenance windows were closing and the BNSF started getting the trains rolling so we got ourselves into position down by
Chelsea on KS hwy 177 and worked our way back up to Ellinor just off of US hwy 50.

Here are a few photographic results of this Gentleman Texan's visit to our beloved Kansas Flint Hills...

pic 21 wound up on the Lost Springs Sub, everything except the last car is still sitting at Lost Springs with the track stabilizer being left up at Superior. Anybody know anything about this?
