In the past few years, many nice locomotives have been donated to the group at Ogden, only to wind up being sold off, such a shame, that the windows get broken, and other such things.

I think this might be the same group trying to rebuild the " Moon Glow " passenger car

Yes but at the same time it reminds me of the guy they called Walleye on Hotshots who had the eye disorder. But still a neat shot!

All it takes is money to do the work.

I'm sure the museum would appreciate your donation.

Hey Chris, I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that 5371 had most of it's "re-usable" parts removed (prime mover, generator, and traction motors) before being delivered to Ogden. I know that if I was a museum and did not have any where to actually operate a locomotive, I would prefer that the mechanicals be removed if not at least drained, cleaned and preserved and sealed. In today's "pollution aware" society, there is a very big and potentially costly risk to owning a waste container (as viewed by the EPA)full of waste that isn't needed for a static display. And UP can actually use the components to maintain surviving equipment still in use.

As to the appearance, well, it is sad to see history "fade" literally! Maybe some day before it's too late the funds and labor needed will be found. At least she wasn't recycled into a Prius!

Give it to the Colorado Railroad Museum... even though they don't even have room for the one UP gave them.

I would say that photo 1 would make a great caption this. Something like designed to use on any raikroad anywhere with sharp turns...

Beware of metal thieves lurking nearby and looking for unattended locomotives!

IF, the Ogden Museum had an organized effort to specifically restore the locos, and IF the funds solicited were to go DIRECTLY to that effort, I'd be willing to contribute. But, sorry, not interested in a "general fund" contribution to go wherever someone may see fit. (And I'd start on 5371 by replacing the numberboard first, followed immediately by ----canning the ditch lights and replacing the Mars light.)

Get the dimensions, I'm pretty sure any sign shop could make the number board for about $50. I'm sure they would welcome a donation of the specific, completed part. Putting a number board in isn't all that complicated, even I could do it.

All points well taken. Put her back to how she looked when she left La Grange in 197?.

Remaining numberboard has the wrong font anyway; get two of them made with the correct font and put them in. This will help keep water out of undesired places.

Speaking as someone who has intimately worked with the financing of a railroad museum for over 15 years now, I would like to point out that donating to the general funds of such organizations is the MOST important place you can put your money.

There is no point in restoring a locomotive if your gates are closed, you lights aren't on and you can't afford TP for the restroom.

I have encountered the sentiment below many times, often backed with the qualifier "I want to donate to X project because I don't want my money wasted."

First off, if an organization is truly wasting money, don't support them. Period.

Second, get over the idea that placing signs, stocking the bathroom, clearing brush (especially in fire area), adding security fencing, etc. is "wasting money". There are a LOT of things needed to keep even a small museum running. THESE ARE NEEDED if the overall collection is to survive at all.

If a museum has a well fed general fund, more projects get done. This is a fact. If they have a bunch of fat restricted funds but nothing in their general, things grind to a halt.

If you must donate to a specific project, an excellent compromise is to split your donation: maybe 50% to the project and 50% to general.

Great point Rathole, and I noticed that right away. My research showed that over the years it's had 3 different number board font styles (original, SP-style and this one.) I've inquired with two people at management levels at the Ogden Museum about my willingness (and ability) to replace BOTH number boards with the correct, original font. IF I get the green light, I'll need two gaskets to make the installation. (Any ideas where THOSE can be bought/donated?) The Mars light would be a more serious donation/purchase. I have no idea where to locate one of those. This is a "no fee, no charge, no obligation, free-gratis" offer to the Ogden Railroad Museum specific to one small but glaring and conspicuous need on a prominant display piece. Let's see what happens.

I know where there is at least one - I posted this a couple weeks ago, VMV Paducah, KY, and lots and lots of standard EMD numberboard gaskets floating around also... === === = === JLH
