BNSF Heritage Hoppers
Author: RioGrandeFan

It may not be locomotives but it's still pretty cool. Reports are BNSF is painting some "heritage hoppers". 9 road names: ATSF, BN, CB&Q, C&S, FW&D, GN, NP, SL-SF, and SP&S. 3 cars in each road name for a total of 27 cars.

A photo of one of the GN cars is here (not my photo): http://i1156.photobucket.com/albums/p579/lasupport/IMAG0084.jpg

Does anyone have any more info?

UP was supposed to have a similar program, I have never seen one outside of some photos on here...

I have always felt that cars were a great opportunity for heritage programs...

Apparently UP did the same thing as well.

Here are 3 of the UP ones that I have seen.

1.) SSW 78892 with the cotton gin logo. This car is still in the same service, currently hauling a load of rice from the same industry it is pictured in to the CSXT at Memphis. 6-23-07 - Stuttgart, AR (home rails)
2.) DRGW 15564 with the pair of logos. Car doesn't show up in the UP computer system. 11-4-07 - Poplar Bluff, MO
3.) SSW 74990 with a Chessie car. Car doesn't show up in the UP computer system. 8-26-06 - Valmeyer, IL

Speaking of BNSF Heritage units whats the deal with the "GN" patches on some older BNSF units? Just curious.

Old, dead locomotives that are for sale, retired, etc. Doing this releases the numbers for new BNSF locomotives.

It's the same way UP uses "WP" on retired locomotives still on the property.

The story that gets passed around is that UP has to have a few freight cars running around with old heralds in order to demonstrate that those heralds are in "active use" so they can retain their trademark registration. I can't confirm that that's the reason in these particular cases, but trademarks do expire if they aren't maintained.
