Midwest 2012 Day 3-IAIS 513 and more
Author: oyw

Picking up where we last left off...we were back in the Iowa City area by Monday night, October 16. In anticipation of the Rock Island painted 513 we knew was on Tuesday morning's CBBI, we found rooms at the Clarion Inn in the Amana Colonies (BTW a very nice place). Plans were to wake up early and head west until we ran into the train but that all changed when we heard the 513 get a warrant to Iowa City around 6AM. It was still an hour before sunrise and to add to the drama, the weather was predicted to be mostly cloudy early, getting worse as the day progressed.

1) A "windshield" sunrise photo along I-80 as we headed for Iowa City shows the weatherman was right...for the time being.

We arrived Iowa City in time to watch the 513 cut off his train. We heard over the scanner that there was some sort of problem with the 513 and worried it would be set out. But thankfully after some switching with the other two units 150 and 717, the 513 was put back on.

2) Around 9:45AM, the train enters the mainline on the east side of Iowa City as the skies began to clear.

3) After leapfrogging the clouds, we found some pretty decent light at Atalissa at 10:30.

3 more parts to follow...

4) A few miles later, the CBBI curves into Durant, Iowa.

5) One last shot of the train at Walcott. They made better-than-average time into Davenport so we just missed the street running shot. None the less, it turned out to be a good chase and we all felt fortunate to get what we did.

6) After a headsup from trainboy03 (thank you Erik), we headed over to East Moline and found the BNSF 2015 coming west on a local.

7) Also while at East Moline, we were able to get the Nitrin job behind two classic ICE GP9's, 103 and 105.

8) We waited further west at 41st ST for the ex-Soo geeps and 12 tank cars, you can see the Mississippi River if you look close.

9) After lunch, we stumbled across this two-mile long southbound crawling through town on the ICE. We found a nice gap in the clouds in downtown Davenport for ICE6434/CP6255/6054/5958. At least the blue and yellow unit was on the point.

10) Iowa was great to us but we spent one more day here than planned so it was time to move on. By late afternoon near Burlington, the clouds were building and Wednesday called for major rainstorms over the entire midwest. It would be a good travel day to get us closer to the KCS and Arkansas and Missouri.

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for the rest of the trip.

OYW

Those are terrible pictures, an awful reminder of what I should be doing instead of working.

Nice work! As of last Friday all 3 of the IC&E GP9s have been parked and stored. Doubtful they'll ever turn a revenue wheel again.
