It sure is convenient to have a boogie man to blame when the article includes mention of lower natural gas prices!

Interesting article that sums up the many reasons coal is losing ground. While air regulations are talked about, most of the article shows how the gas boom, leading to a huge supply and lower costs, are one of the main motivators of the switch.

While this is bad news for coal hauling railroads, to pin all this on the EPA or some mythical "War on Coal" is naive and ignores the many factors, including free market ones, that are leading to this dramatic change.

There is nothing mythical about the war on coal. Wait for new EPA rules coming out after the first of the year. I promise you it is war.

You have a cite for these new rules? Or is this second/third/fourth/fifthhand?

Google "2013 EPA coal regulations". Plenty of reading. Beyond the simple fact of natural gas being cheap, efficient, available, green, etc, there is plenty of political drama involved.
