BNSF Lite power move GP30/35's
Author: SD452XR

There is a Light Engine train running right now from Barstow to Chicago CSX. All the GP30's and GP35's are lettered LTEX. So we all know where those are going. Train will run thru AZ at night. People in NM and TX might have a good photo op. 23 of the old units in all.

Anyone notice of #2472 was in the mix?

Never got a decent shot of that thing.

I presume that these are all ex-BN or ATSF units? Farewell...B

Should be ex-ATSF units.

Are there still more of these units stored at Barstow, or is that the last of them?

I saw this move east of Goffs just around sunset. The crew told a passing train that it is heading to Galesburg rather than Chicago, presumably for scrap. The final Altamont press California timetable states that BNSF was trying to sell these units back then--2009--so either it's found a buyer or it's simply given up. The LETX markings certainly looked as though they were there for convenience, not as an indication of a permanent homr.

2472 does not appear on the system. Can't find it anywhere...

Looks like BNSF auctioned all those units that now show LTEX lettering (plus 2472 and many more) back in June:

http://auctions.bnsf.com/cgi-bin/auction.exe/placebid?a=2810

The GP30's and 35's still listed as BNSF were not included, except for 2400.

I'm sure there's a good reason and all, but its a little humoring to see DPU on a light power move...

I'm sure this has passed through Flagstaff already, however can anyone share a current location of this train? Thanks.

So, did BNSF decide the DPU was not such a great idea?

What's inside a GP30U or a GP35U? Turbo 16-567 or were they rebuilt with 645 PA's and Roots?

The locomotive folio claims they have turbocharged 16-645E3 prime movers, D32E main generators, and D77 traction motors. The nightmarish electrical cabinet was also simplified. Following rebuild, the two types were identical internally, rated at 2500hp.

It is still DP'd, just the train tracking feature that was copied and pasted from has a limit of how many locomotives it'll show.

Never thought much about it but the HP would have had to be limited as 2500 is about all you'll get
out of a D32 generator.
