Western Railroad Discussion > CFNR Night Along the West Valley Sub

With the recent time change, the California Northern trains have been returning to Davis late around dusk. This has given me a few opportunities to night shoot the overall undershot West Valley Subdivision. All these shots were taken in the past week. Hope you enjoy!

Photo 1) The CFNR Davis Turn comes rolling through the farm fields just north of Davis as the sun sets.

Photo 2) CFNR 504 gets a yellow signal as it approaches Davis.

Photo 3) The Southern Pacific searchlights at MP 76.7 stand tall as a little league game rages on nearby.

Photo 4) A dark searchlight stares out into the dark night in Davis. Luckily some of these searchlights are still left around the Davis area. They have been replaced on much of the line do to copper theft.

Photo 5) The searchlight signal now displays green as the CFNR Maxwell Turn returns from it's setout. It will now tie up on a spur near here for the night.

Photo 6) The Davis Turn is all tied up and resting on the siding, but the Maxwell Turn still has to tie up for the night. Here is comes back north on the West Valley Sub towards "Ball Parks".

Photo 7) The warm light of CFNR 503 lights up the signals at MP 76.7.

Photo 8) CFNR 503 comes rolling past the searchlights and enters it's night time spur.

Photo 9) CFNR 503 is all tied up so the conductor climbs off the train and heads for home.

Photo 10) After being told by Dispatcher 62 that it would be 15 minutes until they could cross the mainline of the Martinez Subdivision, CFNR 503 and the Maxwell Turn come to a stop in North Davis.

Photo 11) Now with the all clear, CFNR 503 heads south to makes its setout for the night.

I really wonder if UP plans on taking over this line and running it?

Gone are the days of SP lumber drags whining into town on dynamics, or empties accelerating northbound towards Tehama, cars rocking on the stick rail...
