As noted in earlier threads, BNSF recently sold off a bunch of former Santa Fe GP30s and GP35s to Larry's Truck and Electric and are moving them east in a large light power move, as the D BARCSX1 09M. Luckily I was around this afternoon when they passed through east central Kansas on their way east. Not the best sun for an eastbound but a special move like this makes the rules go right out the window.

1. The train crossing over from Main 2 to Main 1 at Merrick, just west of Emporia, KS.
2. A pair of 35s and a 30.
3. More of them...

Amazing how good most of them still look. Kind of pains you to think of how they could still be found on STACK TRAINS 6 or 7 years ago.

Hard to count but, I think it is 22 units. Adn it takes 4 units to pull that?? Maybe its the need of dynamic braking.

I wonder how many of those I sat in over my 9 Santa Fe years.

Yes, in the early 80's. Still turbocharged, 2500hp.

Anybody know how long they have been sitting in Barstow?

The ex-ATSF GP30's and GP35's all went into storage in early 2009 as the recession began to take its toll. A few GP35's were sprung from storage and rebuilt into 2650-class "GP39-3's," gaining microprocessors and AR10 alternators and losing their 36" fans. From the looks of it, BNSF isn't planning to convert the whole 100+ unit fleet. As for the GP30's, reportedly the carbody wouldn't accomodate the new GP39-3 electrical cabinet, so they were all surplus.

A sad procession. Here are at least three on that train that I have run.
top: I stopped the 2414 for a reflection shot on the Harbor Sub near MP 14 at the intersection of Aviation Blvd and El Segundo Ave in '02.
middle: a parked the 2558 and train on the over pass of Artesia Blvd the straddling the cities of Redondo Beach and Lawndale on the Harbor Sub in '02.
bottom: a portrait in the yard in El Segundo, CA also on BNSF Harbor Sub (recetly posted) in '04.
all taken on the BNSF LA to Wilmington, CA Harbor Sub while working yard job 711.

Wow, what a catch. Many of the former ATSF 30's are already at LTEX, and a couple have actually made it back out to work on other lines. Case in point, the 2436 on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic in Akron, Ohio this past Saturday....with a very bad paint out job. We'll have to be on the lookout for this batch over here in NEO.

I caught GP39-2 rebuilds 2805 and 2830 at Kansas City on October 20 and 2820 at Albuquerque on October 24. Are these rebuilt from ex-ATSF GP30s or from the old BN rebuild program?

Really nice to see all that power in one cut---sad to know the details---wish they could have been used for local's power and perhaps they will in the form of short lines. Nice photos Austin.

Thanks for the comments everyone and thanks JB for those "in action " pics from a few years ago. I know I've spent my fair share of time on some of these units but nowhere near as much as you, Lance, or any of the other SF/BNSF rails on here.

Those GP39Ms in new BNSF paint are BN rebuilds.

No. BNSF 2830 started out as CBQ 944 (GP30), and 2820 began as GN 3014 (GP30).
