Blue Hour in Baldwin with the MKT #142
Author: bnsfsd70

Well, coming home from an unsuccessful chase of some new KCS units (see: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,2930855), I stopped by the Midland Rwy. in Baldwin City, KS to take a peek at their new dinner train, the "Kansas Belle." Sure enough, I pulled up to the depot, and actually caught some action, as a few of the volunteers were switching equipment around, prepping for the weekend's schedule.

Though this is an ex-Santa Fe line/depot, the Katy unit always looks to be right at home here. Here are a few of the MKT 142 and crew in action at the depot.

For more on the dinner train, see here: http://www.facebook.com/KansasBelleDinnerTrain

Thanks for looking,
- Jeff Carlson

Nice photos. I think I was just reading about this a couple of weeks ago. Isn't this the dinner train that moved to Baldwin City from somewhere else after 10-15 years? Are they using an locomotive on each end, or just backing one way?

Thanks.

Great job with the lighting! Was this all hand-held, or were you on a tripod?

Love that old Katy motor, and it's nice to have a running Alco just 10 miles from home too. Going to take the grand kids down there for a trip next weekend.

It's the former Fremont Dinner train fron Fremont, NE. The train is not pictured in any of his pictures. It has red smooth side cars with silver roofs.

How did the guy with the walker get up on the engine?

Tripod, using that 50mm f1.8 lens. All of the lighting was ambient, and being about 5:30, there was still a bit of light in the sky.

Thanks,
Jeff

He climbed up/down the stairs, the same as anyone else.

The Katy 142 may be a hermaphrodite, but the ex NYC 8255 is 100% ALCo. Nice pictures, Jeff. Excellent lens choice, there!

Forget the prime mover in that thing, that single-chime Blat horn it has is awesome! I was listening to them switch with it, and I totally got a kick out of that horn.

Thanks, I got a good deal on it. I know a guy.
