BNSF GE count
Author: TTownTrains

There seems to be a gawd-awful number of orange or red & silver 6-axle GE's running around on BNSF. I've looked at various roster sites, and there doesn't seem to be an agreement among them as to how many of each model BNSF has. I'm curious what the official BNSF count is, broken down by Dash 9-44CW, AC4400CW, ES44DC, ES44AC, and ES44C4. The total is surely in excess of 3000, maybe even 3500.

This has been well chronicled on various Internet sites and Withers Publishing BNSF motive power review - at the conclusion of 2012 deliveries and recent retirements counts are:

1788 Dash9-44CW
121 AC4400CW
720 ES44DC
715 ES44AC (includes 30 pre-production AC4400EV)
500 ES44C4

GE they bring evil to life. Also it makes railfanning them boring which is why I have not for over a year.

To put that in perspective, according to Del Grosso, the independent Santa Fe in 1994 only had 1766 locomotives to its name, period.

= 3844 Modern GE locomotives that all pretty much look alike = One very boring railroad!

BNSF motive power may be boring but I'm not sure that was a criteria when Warren Buffet bought it. How about a bottom line that makes money?

How many former Santa Fe Dash 8-40CWs are still on the roster?

Querying the mainframe, I can only find BNSF (ATSF) 867-951. So there are supposedly still 84 out of Santa Fe's original 151 Dash 8-40CWs on the BNSF roster. Few if any of the remaining Dash 8s have recorded any movement in the last couple years though.

Some of the Dash 8-W's did get reactivated for a time last year- I was as Argentine when they were putting several of them back into service.I also remember seeing a very shabby 930 leading a grain train in Fort Worth last April. However, the reprieve was relatively short lived- all are either stored, or of course sold off to CN. I would be surprised if any of these turned a wheel for BNSF again

You guys have pretty much summed up why we chase the 4 axle stuff, it's about
all that's left that qualifies for variety.

This reliance on one builders products is going to bite them in the XXX at some point. Especially as this particular builder has a reputation that their products are use once and throw away. I've seen few rebuilt for continued service.

At one time the 567/645 series was easy to rebuild, the older EMD's had easily
serviceable traction motor assemblies and main generators. I'd say in this day
and age that advantage is pretty much gone. There is no reason why a GE can't
be rebuilt and with the number in service the parts availability will be much
enhanced. GE never really did go after the parts business with the vigor of
EMD (experience in the auto industry) but again that's all changed.

What if instead of all those GE's, they were mostly all EMD SD70M, SD70MAC, SD70M-2, SD70ACe SD75M, SD75I locomotives? Would BNSF be any less boring? Hmmmmmmm.
