Author: aronco

Both responses bring a smile to my face on a gloomy, rainy Monday in the Bay Area, thanks!

This was actually a warmer some trip than some. It was actually above freezing a couple of days as we crossed Canada back and forth. The all-time records for TIOGA PASS was filling the car with water at Chapleau, Ontario, in March, 2012, at 36 degrees below zero. The man who runs the boiler room and pump house there was standing in the early morning sunshine and said " What a fine day eh? It could warm up to zero today!"

So how do you keep the water in the tanks from freezing at those temps?? Did the original car have tank heaters or are they all internal to the heated car?

Take that second shot, convert to B&W and it could be the US Army on the way to the German front in Winter 1944-45.

Like everything else in the car, it's heated. Heat is provided by a 45 kw hot water system and piped throughout the car. There is a loop from the heater than runs down through the water tank enclosure. Any other exposed piping has electric heat tape on it to keep it from freezing. All of the water piping for the sinks and showers is run inside the car below the heat registers to prevent freeze-ups.
