Reefer Car Restoration (update)
Author: kklarr

Last month some may have seen a story I posted about preserving 2 reefer cars, however only one was able to get preserved. Here is an update on the progress of the restoration on the one reefer car for UTA (Utah Transit Authority). Rocky Mountain Railcar Repair in Tooele Utah is doing the restoration for UTA, they have been great to work with and has allowed us to follow the progress of the car. Today I went to Tooele with a fellow NRHS member to take more pictures, the car has been all painted and they were going to be adding all the graphics on it today, also they will be removing the trucks from the car to get them painted and get everything loaded onto semi-trucks with the plan to deliver the reefer car on Thursday morning Dec. 20th to UTA's new Light Rail station in Draper Utah for display. The car will be painted as a UTAH POULTRY PRODUCERS famous for Milk White Eggs. Rocky Mountain Railcar Repair has really gone above and beyond with the repairs of this car even though it will be displayed they have repaired the couplers, air lines, doors, etc.

#1 This is one of the pictures I took from Kanab Utah on 11/19/2012 when we were loading the car.

#2 This picture was just after the car was sandblasted at Rocky Mountain Railcar Repair in Tooele Utah on 12/4/2012

#3 I took this picture today 12/18/2012 one day after the car was painted, before the graphics were added

Thanks for looking, watch for more updates.

Ah ha! a 12" scale model....
Fun to see, thanks.
Glad you masked off the coupler so the "rust" paint you put on the coupler stayed intact ;-)

Looking forward to the finished product. What year was it built?
Thanks for sharing your photos.

Ha Ha! that is funny, making it look as real as possible:)
The couplers are also going to be painted with the trucks which will be black. I should have added that detail

Thanks

Thanks for posting your photos and the information. However, I'm curious as to why UTA is involved in this project. Was Utah Poultry Producers a rail-served industry along a rail corridor now used by UTA and this is an effort to make the public aware of local industrial history?

Nice to see the car in good hands. What paint scheme will this car be painted in? It doesn't look like it will stay in PFE paint. Also, what happened to the other car? Was it too decrepit to be preserved?

Best Regards,
Harry

That is very close to the reason, UTA also had to use some of a site that was registered on as a Historical site and they came up with agreement to display the reefer car at the site.

The car won't be a PFE it will be a fantasy paint scheme as a Utah Poultry Producers. The 2nd car is still at the site in Kanab Utah in fairly good shape, the problem was that the cars weight was about 10,000 lbs more than what was stenciled on the car and the semi-truck we had there wasn't able to handle the extra weight.

I'm curious why these two refers were located down in Kanab which is many miles from any railroad.
