Fuel Consumption - Powder River Coal Trains
Author: plochridge

THis is a two part question:

I'm doing a little research on fuel consumption and efficiency with Coal unit trains heading points east.
Question #1: Does anybody have any information on how many gallons of fuel are consumed on a round trip from Southern Powder River (Black Thunder, Antelope etc...) to the following destinations:

St. Louis (off-load points on mississipi)
Kansas City (interchange yard with KCS
Galveston/Pelican Island
Chicago (Cicero)
Memphis
Seattle (Transalta power plant)

Question #2: How long does it take to complete this trip (load, travel, off-load, return)? I have quite a bit of info to help me answer these, but the more information the better. Thanks!

so ballpark 0.1 mpg if you figure an average road speed of 20-30 mph?

Maybe he's a NIMBY. Maybe he's a treehugger. Maybe he's a new guy

Except for those locomotives in use today to haul Powder River Coal trains....

What is it those CSX radio ads say, 435 tons one mile on one gallon of diesel.

New guy would be accurate, definitely not those others. I'm researching LNG as a possible fuel alternative for locomotives, so understanding locomotive fuel consumption and where the refueling occurs is all very important. Of particularly interest are unit trains heading out of Powder River. Now that I think about it, LNG is a lot cleaner burning than diesel.......so maybe that puts me in tree-hugger category after all:)

Keep us up dated.... The differances in emissions would be interestering..... I imagine more natural gas needs to be burned, but is much cleaner...
