Terrible timing, north east of Herington, KS.
Author: waycar_rider

I was heading into Herington, Kansas. I pulled off of US Highway 77, so I could get a shot of the tracks and signals. My car was parked south of the overpass. I got the shot that I wanted. I walked back to my car, which took less than five minutes. I pulled across the bridge, so I could turn around. When I drove on the bridge, this train was showing up. I would have preferred to shot the train from the south side, but you take what you can get.

This is the former Rock Island Line, then it became the Cotton Rock.

Nice pic, thanks for sharing. I'm really surprised that some 30 years after the UP took over that line those old RI signals are still there.

The signals are the newer style that SP put in. They have bigger
heads on them than the older Rock Island signals. Dan

Did you photograph any eastbounders from the west side of the highway at "Byers Bluff"?

Don't think those are old RI signals. It is ironic that the contemporary signals are reminiscent of the Rock signals.

I was down there late Wednesday, solo. Lance and I started there Thurs morning. We went west for a stack train heading down the GSR. He met an eastbound train at Ramona. They fueled the two units at Herington. We went out to the bluff for this eastbound. We did get a westbound auto train there. We headed east. The train that was fueling got run around at Herington by a stack train. We caught the second train just west of Latimer. We finally saw the other train east of White City.

Love those newer circle tri-lights. More of those, please, instead of the hooded things.

... some 30 years after the UP took over that line ...

Of course it was the SP for the first 14 years, and they weren't the types to go overboard on improvements, like the UP has always been.
