New cab design???
Author: santafe199

While running around Topeka yesterday (1st) with TO member “rathole” we discovered this radical new RR cab design, presumably
out of Topeka Shops. Apparently there will also be a new human (?) design to go with this futuristic cab. Evidently the cab designers
are counting on a new variation of crew member biological function; one that will no longer need the old & hopefully obsolete human
waste receptacle down in the no-longer-necessary nose compartment. It is thought that forward visibility will be improved drastically…

1. & 2. Santa Fe cab mock-up sitting in the Great Overland Station museum grounds in Topeka, KS on October 1, 2013.

Thanks for holding it!

Watch your STEP going out that cab front "door"...... Where's the horn - so you can scare the bejeezes out of those in line? Someone bag the antenna? Looks like a pair of wires stubbed through the roof mount bracket. Good catch, Sir Lance!

Don't you understand that this is a cab for non crewed engines? The windows are just to protect the video cameras that will be mounted inside.

It looks like a Railroad Days parade float. The lines are GE, I will bet it rattles and leaks as well as being colder than heck in the winter and hotter than blazes in the summer.

Look a little harder at the trailer. The cab is on a rotating base.
Going by the steps on the rear of the trailer, the cab turns 90 degrees clockwise so the door on the backwall lines up with the stairs.
Trailer would be too wide if the cab was facing front.

This was a mock-up cab or kind of a locomotive simulator for attendees of the Topeka Railroad Days Festival that was held every Labor Day weekend at Forbes Field.

It's a cleverly-disguised Cyclops prototype!

Here's that "new" cab back in 1990, sitting amongst Santa Fe's collection of severed heads in the Topeka boneyard. I've heard that it had been used as a mockup to familiarize crews with the desktop control stands that were being introduced on the GP60M's.

Sitting next to the "1000" is the cab from SD45-2 5701, lopped off when the unit became SD45-2B 5514. Not sure how the hindquarters of SP SD45 9156 got there.

I don't know how the SP 9156's rear end got there either, but it leads a charmed life. The SP bought SD-45s from 8800 to 9155, then the unit that was to become the 9156 was involved in a wreck and sent back to EMD for a rebuild as the 9156. Then the SD-45T2s were built from 9157-9404.
