Derailments all too often happen in unopportune places.

Did the westbound Southwest Chief get by it?

So, would this be the overpass just inside NM, to the east of Lupton?

The answer for Mudrocks question is no. LA based Amtrak T&E crew for westbound #3 just " set back" 8 hours in Kingman AZ. Which translates to their on duty time has been reset to about 8am MST to allow for planning.

On the AmTrak website with the new tracker, it shows "no status" for #3, but also shows it at Gallup headed back eastbound?

Don't know but if you ride Amtrak on this route you'll wish you had a seatbelt. Far cry from the smooth as glass trackage that was maintained so well by the ATSF.

It looks like #3 and #4 might have to be turned maybe?

That bad now eh? I rode the Chief from LA to ABQ and return in 2009 and had never experienced such a rough train ride. Obviously much worse now, only hope Amtrak isn't the next thing to go on the ground... knock on wood.

The ATSF never dreamed of the traffic level's we're pushing across the Trans-con these days. We'll have to wait for the official cause. Until then it's a little too early to blame it on the track ....

Looks like this I-40 overpass- http://goo.gl/maps/9PdLl Hwy. 118 is a bypass around the bridge. Is the crew okay?

Latest report is 50 cars on the ground and yes, the crew is ok. Amtrak #3 is being turned on the wye at Defiance. Amtrak 42 is the leader.

Well Amtrak #3 is in Albuquerque. NMRX dispatcher was having a heart attack around 0200-0300 after an Abajo RCO switch engine malfunctioned on the mainline, holding up #3 and Amtrak 93 light power for the Wye (East to West face).

NMRX DS: Where is your engineer? (Yeah BNSF, where is he?)
Amtrak Roadforeman on the radio: BNSF xxxx, I'm an Amtrak RF, I might be able to help you, what's wrong?
BNSF Crew: Our RCO motor keeps dumping its air. Its remote controlled.
Amtrak RF: So is it Distributed Power?
BNSF Crew: No, its a switch engine...

Oy!

The derailment occurred in High Speed territory, 90-70, I doubt the empty Coal Train was qualified for more than 45 or 55 MPH...

Coal empties are good for 60MPH on the BNSF Gallup Sub.
