Signal Sunday: Fresno, CA
Author: Ritzville

Old fashioned scene on the BNSF (old Santa Fe)mainline in Fresno on June 26, 2012. I love the old fashioned pole line. Their days were numbered as new signals were under construction. I miss the older signals and pole line.

I must admit, there is a certain poetry to those cantilevers.

That's a first for me, the signal post on the short cantilever.

It's funny how overbuilt those new cantilever bridges are. Huge compared to the old ones that worked well for so long. Can't be cheap.

the new signal bridge will likely have a much longer overhang and thus require more support, especially with one (or two) signal maintainers up there working, plus add in earthquake factor of safety.

That, and aluminum is intrinsically less rigid than steel, hence the larger column with its bracing.
