UPRR at Ivanpah - Cima Sub - Stack train and Manifest
Author: syscom3

I posted an earlier thread showing pictures of UP8142 at Ivanpah, and the manifest train that went past it. Here's the video.

Map: The red arrow points to Primm, Nevada. The blue arrow is where Ivanpah is located, about 15 miles south of Primm. You can see Nipton right in the middle. Ivanpah was long a stop for a long defunct railroad, the California & Eastern. This short line originated at Goff's (Where the AT&SF was located) and headed north to this point, where it was an interchange with the LA&SL. Back then, it was known as "Leastalk". The line continued north to a point where Morning Star Mine Road meets with Ivanpah Road.

There were many productive mines in this area at the turn of the century and this interchange must have seen regular activity. But as with many small stops in the desert, once the mines played out, activity came to an end. The C&E abandoned the line in the 1920's. Only a couple mines that were still productive and active continued to use it, in addition to the ranches that used the surrounding desert for grazing. Once the Mojave Preserve was established in the 1990's; even this last activity that warranted Ivanpah to be a siding came to an end.

So now Ivanpah just sits in the glare of a merciless sun, in a mostly silent part of the desert, listening to the occasional blare of the train horns as they pass across the road crossing. Maybe one day Ivanpah will be resurrected as a small visitor center and museum. Sorry for the dramatics, but part of the lore of this place is its isolation.
