WB Hospital Train on Cajon
Author: GRNDMND

With help from "friends in high places", I was able to re-position myself to the appropriate location for the descent of Cajon by the UP special this afternoon. That is, hearing that the train was out of Summit on the #3 track and not crossing over at Silverwood as many, including myself, had hoped for. The first view shot from Stein's Hill of the approaching train and then, the going away shot at PineLodge. Hey, I recognize three in this view. There's F.R.E.D. and the conductor KAE and "RSD5". Thanks for looking in.

KC - Thanks for the "heads up" RSD5!

Nice shots Kevin and you're exact on the time, 5:35PM by my watch. Glad you made it out and sorry for the last second dust storm at Stein's.

I will second that, we were really cutting it close rolling up at the last second.

Very nice shots.

The hospital train could turn on the balloon track at Colton easily? Then back to the business spur where 4014 is stationed? The train can be assembled there also, ready for monday departure? The train would appear similar to the move from pomona?

I thought a hospital train was banged up cars from a derailment that were patched up mechanically to be moved for repair. Nothing there looks banged up.

I thought about that as well. I think the more accurate term would be along the lines of retrieval special.

You know, for the last 48 years that is what I thought also.

You are correct in that nothing on this train is "banged up". Probably the wrong terminology for the equipment that will be used to accompany the Big Boy back to Cheyenne, which could then I guess be termed a hospital train...or not. You can call it what ever hits you. From what I hear, the return train will have some added flat cars for additional braking and that will be the eastbound consist.

There is a one inch dent in a cylinder jacket of the big boy. Maybe that counts.

Well the 4014 does need to be brought back to health so she can run on her own.

Cars or engines don't have to be specifically "banged up" to be considered a "hospital train". It could be that the cars, engines, or in this case the "Big Boy", just have to be non functional. This train will become the hospital train along with added flat cars as mentioned above to move the Big Boy.

Kevin, I talked with Kenny and Dennis last night and this was less than a stellar trip. They deadheaded up to Yermo to bring the train back down to West Colton and never had a green signal until they got to Summit. They'll be back on it Monday to take the Big Boy on it's first leg of it's journey home at a nose bleed 20 MPH. And as Kenny reminded me, it won't be on "home" rails until they reach Daggett.-BMT

B- I heard that they didn't tie up until after 10pm last night. I also heard they were following other traffic from Barstow all the way in.
That last statement of yours is one reason why he wanted this run too!

That's why I ran into Kenny, I was also tying up. I brought the KLBG2 to the front door and as a little kiss, had to patch the LOP92 (Mojave Flyer), who had died in the Sierra siding. We were headed to the roundhouse with the power when I heard Kenny on the radio shoving the special into the 200 pocket across from the Admin. building.-BMT

I would think a more correct name would be "Support train". To me, hospital train implies a string of dead-in-tow locomotives or other rolling stock headed for a shop or a scrap yard.
