Western Railroad Discussion > Two More Pics, UP 4014, 4884, and TrainDate: 04/22/14 22:14 Two More Pics, UP 4014, 4884, and Train Author: TheNavigator Here's just a couple shots of today's westbound positioning move of UP equipment in preparation for moving Big Boy 4014 from West Colton to Yermo (and points east) beginning on April 28. (See http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3388585 for a list of the equipment involved.)
Thanks for looking, GK 1. 4014, 4884, and train have just swung onto the BNSF from home rails at Daggett, Calif. as the conductor gives us a hearty wave from the cab. The train stayed on the BNSF down Cajon Pass to Keenbrook where it crossed over to the UP Palmdale Cutoff and thence to West Colton. 2. Near Lugo on the east side of Cajon Pass approaching Summit. Gary Date: 04/23/14 02:01 Re: Two More Pics, UP 4014, 4884, and Train Author: Red What is amazing to me is the paint & cleanliness of the 2000-model EMD SD70M UP 4014. They just make the paint & clear coat better now. And this is undoubtedly a "million-miler loco" by now that may well not even have had it's first overhaul/rebuild. Maybe a power assembly or two (or not?) replaced. But look at the relatively clear exhaust as it's "winding up" in some of these shots, and some from other posts. (Just as the original 25 SP SD70Ms were with over a million miles on them--no oily or overly black exhaust). The reason this was the "replacement model" the UPRR chose.
And just LOOK at how the paint has aged (or rather, NOT aged) on these compared to the old UPRR SD60Ms from 1989--1992 which was basically oxidized and peeling off within 3 or 4 years (ditto on the ATSF GP60Ms and B40-Ws of the same period). Just sayin, you know??? Date: 04/23/14 06:40 Re: Two More Pics, UP 4014, 4884, and Train Author: Cajon92 Nice images, Gary. Thanks for sharing.
