Date: 04/23/14 12:26 Re: Derailment Tehachapi Author: P5r24 The picture I have from the derial site shows
a group of centerbeam lumber cars flopped over from the main onto the siding at the maintenance road X-ing closer to the middle of Cliff siding. I'll try and get it posted on here, Gary Well Sorry guys, it won't let me post an Iphone pic on here? :-( The centerbeams are emptys. Edited 4 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/14 05:30 by P5r24. Or is it the miracle of the Internet that hearing about it is faster and more widespread?

This is about the time of year when they get started last year.
Scott Date: 04/23/14 13:28 Re: Derailment Tehachapi Author: railstiesballast One might start looking for a UDE at the rear of the train, setting up the brakes hard and tipping over those tall, light cars. Certainly wasn't pulling the train here if it was a northbound.
(Empty lumber flats should be going north....) Date: 04/23/14 13:38 Re: Derailment Tehachapi Author: TCnR Nasty stuff. Curious if it was DPU equipped, they should help reduce many of the UDE triggers.

I think you're onto something here.... ;) Date: 04/23/14 14:08 Re: Derailment Tehachapi Author: cajon Most north trains that I have seen would have one DPU engine on the rear, and sometime a lot of empty lumber cars in front of the DPU.
Dennis Date: 04/23/14 14:28 Re: Derailment Tehachapi Author: Out_Of_Service HA !!!!!!!!!!... when will they these derailment prone trains ... give those yardmasters a raise for building these derailment prone trains with empty flats(centerbeams included) in the middle of a heavy train that has to negotiate an uphill grade on a curve ...

Downhill... Well, UP runs the MWCRV and MWCRVB like this all the time so you would think if it was really an issue there would be even more derailments. Besides we aren't even sure what happened...Buff forces? DPU lost continuity with the lead unit? Broken wheel? The trains are build properly to comply with the restrictions in the time table and special instructions. If there is an issue with the train makeup requirements, the blame lies way higher up than the yardmaster. Date: 04/23/14 16:35 Re: Derailment Tehachapi Author: cinder Here is a May 2012 aerial of a southbound manifest approaching the mow crossing at Cliff near where today's apparent stringline occurred.
A derailment similar to the one today occurred in the same location on 2/21/03, 11 years ago. I was at Bealville when it happened. Here is a TO click-on to the 2011 thread. http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,228529,228529#msg-228529 Yes, a stringline of empty lumber cars on a northbound train when the rear DPU apparently shut down while the head end was in tunnel 5. Today's derailment will be quickly cleaned up with trains running again well before dawn. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/23/14 16:52 by cinder.
