A Lightning Bolt on a Stormy Day
Author: GrandeGold

I found out from TO's SP8595 that the CNW 8646 was leading a KG1LAC-27 stacker west into Utah from Wyoming. I drove like a mad man on a mission and intercepted the train in very heavy in Weber Canyon.

1. The CNW 8646 leads the KG1LAC-27 west near Strawberry in Weber Canyon.

2. Heavenly storm lighting adds drama as the stacker rolls west down Main 2 into Uintah.

3. Got super lucky at the Highway 126 bridge when the heavens parted for a few minutes, allowing brilliant sun to illuminate the CNW 8646 west of Ogden.

4. Before entering at the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal, the CNW 8646 stopped for a few minutes at Buena Vista siding, allowing the opportunity to catch one of the many Delta flights landing at Salt Lake International Airport.

5. Lastly, one last view as the KG1LAC-27 rolls to a stop at the Salt Lake City Intermodal Terminal for a crew change.

Thanks for taking a look,

Last check shows the train past Pherson, UT at 22:37M. IT should see daylight well east of Las Vegas somewhere. Current estimate is about 17:00 into Yermo tomorrow.

Hoping the Nevada and California fans can catch this train.

Great photos James!
I especially like photo #2 with the bi-directional mounted P5 signals.

I've always liked the UP-style signals seen in Photo #2. Yes, they're hooded, but they look great, because they're big and fat and nicely set up with an opposing set of signals. If you notice, the back plate is about the same width / diameter of a searchlight backing plate, and thus very easy to see. Plus, they're shorter, so that just adds to it. When UP replaces them with taller, thinner, harder to see signals, Weber Canyon won't be the same...

That's awesome, I guess 8701's "How I spent my summer vacation" won't be as interesting as 8646's!

The second shot is great, perfect angle on the unit, and I think that shot sums up the weather we are getting in Colorado and Utah perfectly.

How many engines are not patched by UP?

There are only two C&NW units not yet patched, C&NW 8646 and 8701…both C44-9Ws.

I'm still surprised they let the 2 CNW units out of the Chicago area.

I got worried as I had not seen the pair lately. I used to see them often on transfers to CN/IC in Homewood or Markham. I hope they are in no danger of being painted or patched. I presume that since by now Omaha is well aware of this pair and could have easily order them updated a long time ago that they are going along with it with a wink and no one else is going to mess with them. Maybe Omaha has put out the word to leave the pair alone and the Proviso boys have been told they don't have to worry about letting them stray.
