CNW 8646 into SoCal yesterday
Author: oilcan

Hopefully you guys don't mind a few more shots from yesterday's chase as CNW 8646, one of only two remaining unpatched CNW motors, led train KG1LA-27 into southern California. Taking a half day off of work, I rode along with good friend "DRGW" out to the high desert east of Yermo to intercept the train and chase him west.

1) After waiting in the extreme desert heat, we finally bag our first shots of the train at Manix.
2) Heavy traffic on the Cima Sub stabs the train just east of Yermo but gets underway again after one eastbound.
3) With a new crew aboard and refueling done at Yermo, the train eases down to the junction at Daggett and holds for traffic on the BNSF to clear.

I should have painted on the nose door a couple years ago when I had the chance. Great shots. Slayed this thing.

4) BNSF traffic now cleared up, CNW 8646 west gets the signal at Daggett and proceeds west toward Barstow.
5) Near Hodge on the Cajon Sub, congestion ahead has the train rolling along at reduced speed as it approaches Hinkley Road.
6) More of a standard view at the same location.

7) And lastly a profile view of the CNW 8646's front end emphasizing that sweet lighting bolt and the historic logo. I'm still shocked this thing made it all the way out here but am thankful it did!

Thanks for having a look,
Jim

2 Questions... First, where is it headed now? Secondly, did anyone else notice the blue paint underneath on the peeling nose?

I bet BNSF & the TREE HUGGERS are crying foul because those 3 old smokey GE'S ran all the way into SoCal.

Cool photos, almost a throwback to the late 90's action on the LA Sub...

Yes they do! Number 5 is my favorite. C44-9W's one of the great locomotives that came out of the 1990's. Go ahead, Chicago & North Western!!
