Western Railroad Discussion > Thunderhead clouds over Mt Shasta this eveningDate: 08/02/14 21:46 Thunderhead clouds over Mt Shasta this evening Author: photobob UP7846 South entering Dunsmuir Yard this evening. The train was going to drop off one locomotive at Dunsmuir. I am speculating it may be power to be used in fire service if things get worse. By the look of those clouds over the mountain they are in for more lighting up north tonight.

Interesting that similar clouds formed over the fire areas at Burney this afternoon. Earlier today another one was over the fire near hiway 3. Possibly caused by winds and hot air rising from the fires. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/02/14 22:24 by TCnR. Pyro cumulus clouds caused from moisture release from vegetation during a fire. Beautiful and awesome in one way given the power of nature but...ugly when you see what the fires are doing. Just hoping the smoke does not come over Redding tonight as we are virtually surrounded by large fires. Can only feel for those losing homes, livestock, cars, and the thousand other things people spend their lives and their fortunes acquiring. I had not heard that Hwy 97 was closed but SR 89 is for sure between Burney and Old Station. Lord, where's the rain ? It will be interesting to see what a fire train can do against this onslaught. Kent in CArmel Valley Date: 08/02/14 22:52 Re: Thunderhead clouds over Mt Shasta this evening Author: RyanWilkerson Are they actually going out tonight? I think the unit they have down on the house track is UP 4744 but that's going from memory.

Ryan Wilkerson Fair Oaks, CA Date: 08/02/14 22:58 Re: Thunderhead clouds over Mt Shasta this evening Author: RyanWilkerson UP 4744 is showing as north of Black Butte a few minutes ago and is scheduled back at Dunsmuir around 5am. Would they drop the water cars up somewhere?

Larry Date: 08/02/14 23:39 Re: Thunderhead clouds over Mt Shasta this evening Author: TCnR In the past the engine stays with the car, maybe they have something different planned. There's not much water in that area, the car would need to be filled at BB or maybe Grass Lake. Not sure if they have a whatchama-callit there.

Up north around Kfalls we are getting ash fallout and very little if any clear sky during the day. Visibility about ten miles or somewhat less at times.
