Grabbing paperwork on the fly at West Chicago, IL
Author: inCHI

This video starts with a CN stack train grabbing paperwork at speed from the ex-EJ&E tower at West Chicago, IL. Unfortunately, I goofed and zoomed out before zooming in, which I tried to fix, but you can still see it happen.

The rest of the video samples a few other CN trains that passed by during about 12 hours that I was there in June. One train I regrettably failed to get video of was 216 empty frac sand cars, which really made a ruckus going across the triple-track UP main. There is a quick sample of it in there.

The photo shows another northbound that I photographed with two CN C40-8M's. I'm still working on getting the photos from this day together; they will be in a future post.

Whoa whoa whoa wait a minute, a manned tower and a crew picking up orders on the fly? I thought it was all crap now! I guess maybe not all the time lol.

This is amazing. I would have lost a LOT of money on a bet. I've gotta believe that the train was picking up paperwork of some kind but not train orders. Is this REALLY train order territory now?

Ignorance on my part, it has been fixed.

Great video! I was quite surprised myself to see a train pick up paperwork on the fly there, however in my case, the train slowed down to walking speed to do it.

Excellent Footage. You were right. That frac sand train beat the Hell outta those diamonds!! I bet it makes a lot of noise when a LOADED one goes across!!

Yeah, the fact that it's a "Quiet Zone" at this location is almost moot! :)

Very nice, thanks for posting the video. I have never been to that spot, how busy is it and what do you see?

Thanks again!

Very busy. UP's triple track main has Metra service and something like 40+ freight trains a day, while CN's route has something like 20 trains a day.

A lot more info is here: http://www.dhke.com/CRJ/turner.html

The website mentions nearly 100 daily on the UP, counting Metra. Correct/incorrect?

I might have understated UP traffic...

This is incredible! Great video and action! I just found my next reason to take another trip to Chicago (via the Zephyr of, course...)!

Hooping orders is still a daily ritual on the Long Island Rail Road. Ironically, today is the 8th anniversary of the closing of PD Tower out there, one of the towers to still hoop them before being consolidated west to a different one.

I was out there in 2009 and watched a train miss catching the trainorders. The commuters that morning weren't too happy when the train stopped in the middle of the crossing so the conductor could run back and pick up the orders...

Excellent video! Was not expecting to see train orders being picked up, nor did I realize they were still used in this fashion! Again, awesome video!!

Most likely a set of TGBOs(Tabular General Bulletin Order) for the crew to get to Fon Du Lac, WI.

I wish I had filmed those EJ&E taconite ore trains back in the 1990's.
