#11 rolled through Dunsmuir just before dawn this morning with five private cars on the rear. The rear drumhead read "Roots on the Rails".

Bob's working those new signals into the composition.

Somethings change, somethings remain the same.

Extra unit to help with the private cars. In my experience, private cars are hard on the schedule, especially when they're added to the train at more than one intermediate stop. I was on the train a couple of years ago when the whole train went into the maintenance facility in Oakland to pick up cars and lost over an hour.

And just why have three locomotives to handle the PVs? I've seen two P42s pull the Auto Train (which is often 50 cars long, 20 passenger cars and 30 autoracks, +-) just like that. Is it perhaps because of grades?

Hmmm, let's think terrain profile... The AutoTrain's route is nearly flat and there are no intermediate station stops. The Starlight's route is very very hilly at times and it has many intermediate station stops to accelerate out of.

Didn't you ask this very same question before?

Saw this train go through Alviso, CA at about 4:20 PM.
