Sort of the other way around. Railfan magazine was around on it's own while Railroad magazine was still in business. Railroad magazine folded and it's assets were purchased by Carstens who folded it into Railfan and Railroad magazine. It is more like the kid bought the doddering old uncle.

Yes, the joint line through here has plenty of natual gas fired switch heaters on the crossovers back and forth across the three tracks here. The line is elevated relative to the local surroundings and you can see the wind comes right off the mountains in the winter.
