Western Railroad Discussion > The proliferaton of new BNSF symbolsDate: 08/28/14 07:45 The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: sums007 Seems there's lots of symbols out there now with newer station names. These guys ran last May. Who can tell us what they are:
U-AWAANA4A Not a clue here! M-MINBIG4A Minot to somewhere M-HVRRSS4A Havre to somewhere M-RYMDND4A Somewhere to Dore, ND M-TROPAS4A Somewhere to Pasco U-DNDDOU0T Dore, ND to somewhere Date: 08/28/14 08:05 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: aehouse Not quite like "The Cannonball," or the "Blue Streak Merchandise," eh what?

Do you mean Rudyard, MT by any chance? A place in the middle of nowhere, west of Havre. Date: 08/28/14 08:47 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: czephyr17 sums007 Wrote:

Also, Troy, ID has not had rail service for years, so it can't be that location. I think he means Troy, Montana, west of Libby. Date: 08/28/14 10:37 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: Pacific5th Are you sure the Troy-Pasco train was a M train? all that Troy yard is used for is staging work train equipment and sometimes stored cars. We do see U Troy trains often enough full of MOW equipment.

ANA - Anacachos, TX AWA - Arco, WA BIG - Big Sandy, MT RSS - Ross, ND RYM - Rudyrad, MT TRO - Troy, MT Mr. MRL Date: 08/28/14 23:11 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: misty1 Unknown symbols but I am guessing one of them is a Havre to Whitefish which started several months ago.

ANA: Anacachos, TX. I lived in Texas for 10 years until recently, and never heard of this place, but Texas IS a big state! On Bing maps, it seems to be on a branch west of Uvalde on the UP Del Rio Sub. Big frac area, if I'm not mistaken. IIRC, Arco is on the BNSF Bellingham Sub, no? Date: 08/29/14 10:39 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: bbcc yes arco is near ferndale, WA, north of bellingham, on the bellingham sub.
now to the original poster -- all of your symbols have a "4" after them. im not a rail but i have spent a few years looking at BNSF symbols...my strong impression is that a suffix "4" is for an unscheduled train...ie something only "As needed" and could be a complete one-off. so these are not regular symbols. im happy if anyone wants to correct me on this. I believe in this case "4" is designating a Hazmat or "Key" train. Mr. MRL Date: 08/29/14 16:22 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: mtnwestrail MrMRL Wrote:

The U's are unit oil trains, the M's are manifest trains. The Troy, MT to Pasco has to be a one time or limited run train as Troy, MT doesn't originate enough traffic to justify a local more than once a month or so, much less fill a train, ever. Probably something got terminated there or was shuttled out from White fish ( long way to shuttle) and a new symbol started. Probably wont see it again, or at least not very often Date: 08/30/14 05:48 Re: The proliferaton of new BNSF symbols Author: sums007 Thanks everyone for the input. Still looking to find out where the U-AWAANA ends up, as well as where the U-AWADOU.
