Moor, Nevada
Author: zfan

Spent the past weekend driving to Sparks from Ogden. Was quite busy at times, especially at Elko with eastbounds trying to get re-crewed and out of town. Here are a couple at Moor, Nevada on the way back Sunday on the UP Lakeside Sub.

1- With the high angle of the sun that time of day, a cloud passing in front of the sun was actually a plus. This eastbound is charging up the Pequop Mountains just east of the east end of Moor. Moor is just east of Wells, and is the end of two main track CTC, until just west of Valley Pass, where it starts up again. For those not familiar with this area, it is old SP territory in sparsely populated Elko county in northeastern Nevada.

2- Sad to see these old searchlights going down. This may be the last time I see them here, since their replacements are laying down nearby. This is the east end of Moor.

3- Westbound manifest at Moor.

Those 90MAC's are probably heading for the Gillette razor blade factory.

We could only be so lucky...

In reality they are heading to Fresno, CA where Harbor Rail Services (HRS) is going to work on them for a return to service. The necessary frame repairs are now being done at Fresno by HRS and also by Metro East Industries in E. St. Louis, IL.

I went by the shop in Fresno just a couple hours ago and can confirm the first four to be done there are now in the middle of their repairs. UP 3570, UP 3731, UP 3733, and UP 3747 have all had their fuel tanks removed from the locomotives and placed nearby on the ground. HRS mechanical personnel could be seen moving around working on all of them. UP 3731, UP 3733, and UP 3747 have also been freshly renumbered in just the last day or two, although it is not officially showing on the computer yet. They were all formerly units in the upper UP 8200's or lower 8300's. Don't have exact numbers yet. Also worth noting is the fact that the three units in the 3700s have had UP shields applied to their noses. Can't believe they are going to the trouble of doing this, but they have. No pics since I was working and the FRA says that's a no-no now. Someone else may be able to see & photo them alongside the west side of the old SP shop building if they are not blocked by other units and/or cars.

While they're doing all this work on them, why don't they upgrade the computers and fix some of their operating reliability problems - so at least they can be used as DP's and trailing motors (doubt they'll ever make good leaders)? Rhetorical question, not expecting anyone to have the answer...
