BNSF down for two at Dunsmuir this morning
Author: photobob

A northbound BNSF train pulls up the siding at Dunsmuir passing UP fire train cars on the rear of a ribbon rail train. The canyon is full of smoke this morning from wildfires far to the west.

Good shots, the smoke adds to the shot. Hopefully it won't last that much longer.

I shot that BNSF train about 1730 yesterday heading east through Martinez. I guess it did not lose too much time in reversing direction in Stockton.

Why can't BNSF handle these trains on their own route? Track replacement window this summer? Maybe the stick rail between Bieber and K Falls is getting replaced?

TIA,

Rob L.

Monitoring the Gateway Sub RR Radio intermittently, sounds like they have Inspector track time and regular trains running. I don't know about the north end though, coverage is only to Halls Flat.

Note that the route between Little Valley and Halls Flat was over run by the Bald Mountain fire a few weeks ago. The general fire area is still active. Last week an engineer was talking about seeing a large tree catching fire and 'torching'. I don't know of any specific Track work though.

Look at the D-cam today. Amazing amount of smoke there today. One of those BNSF single stack trains goes through there just about every day.

We've had 4 on the Gateway today (as of 1900 hours).

It really is that bad too. Yesterday it stayed north of town, like a curtain of fog. The wind changed and now it slowly moves down the canyon. The leaves are blowing but the smoke is not moving very fast. There's a fine ash that's been falling for a couple of days. It's caused by the numerous fires west of Yreka, almost perfect topology to siphon the smoke out into the Shasta Valley and now down the canyon.

Yes they are making it to Malin with the ribbon rail this summer and we have two work trains on during the day. That and all the other traffic. Kinda like in the 70's like some guy covered in this really great book I have.....

Very colorful photos with lush foliage add up to a great picture. Congratulations on getting IOTD.
